BOLD Cohort 23 Library
As promised, here are various resources to continue your nonprofit board leadership journey.
I encourage you to share these links with anyone who has your passion for nonprofit board service.
Onward to putting your passion into action!
Jay Shatz, BOLD Program Director
Session 1:
Not Just a Rubber Stamp video. As we discussed, board service is powered by more than just good deeds. Individual board members are obligated to meet real legal requirements regardless of the size of the organization. This is a great video from Pro Bono Partnership of Ohio (PBPO) for ALL board members to view.
Ohio Attorney General’s Guide for Nonprofit Charity Board Members
You received a hard copy at our in-person session and here is the link to download the PDF.
This is the main page for Ohio Attorney General resources of interest with a particular focus on fundraising guidelines and avoiding charitable theft.
What Does Board Service Entail?
You received a hard copy at our in-person session.
Session 2:
This is a wonderful overview of what a mission driven partnership between staff and board looks like.
I love these seven ways you can rock your role as a nonprofit board member and partner with staff to do great things. The insights are from former P&G CEO John Pepper who is a founder of both the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative and the National Underground Freedom Center (to name a few of his long list of nonprofit efforts!!).
Myths Nonprofit Staff Deal with Now
Nonprofit legend Joan Garry does a great job sharing the current myths woven into the discussion of nonprofits and federal funding cuts. I believe all of us who are volunteer board members need to have an understanding what staff are dealing with in this new reality.
I’m a big fan of this nonprofit advocacy group and I think all of our students who currently serve on boards will appreciate the free downloads arranged by subject matter. They have a great library of books for sale. A tad pricey but good resources!
Session 3:
I want your reaction to this article that ties into our discussion about “the semantics game” many nonprofits are forced to play. Michael is a great partner with BOLD, and I’m curious what you think of the name change.
Basic Framework for Your Pitch
I like the the clean simplicity of this approach, and it is a great way to get started developing your short and sweet pitch.
This is a bit more advanced and targeted to those of you already on boards or engaged with nonprofits. This is an excellent reminder of what makes a clear mission statement. This helps tremendously in crafting communications in all media and especially in pitches.
These are samples of what is used by the Findlay Market Corporation for its board.
Session 4:
We will be using this in our Thursday session. Please become familiar and email me any questions before class. I’m curious the differences you spot with this compared to a typical for-profit financial statement.
This is a deeper dive and probably most valuable to those of you already serving on boards.
