BE BOLD NOW!

Nonprofit organizations are doing the important work of our community in so many ways. They need the commitment and thoughtful input of people like you, who care about their community. UC students can lend a hand in ways that put your passion into action, PLUS make valuable connections for your career.

Leadership Council for Nonprofits is partnering with The Warren Bennis Leadership Institute to encourage taking your volunteering to a new level by expanding your career, meeting new people, AND giving back to your community.

Be a healing presence for those in need

Franciscan Ministries addresses unmet needs of the underserved, vulnerable, and overlooked.  The organization grew out of the community work of the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor. Through a personal approach and diverse services, it supports these four programs:

  • Tamar’s Center provides a safe place for women in crisis while working with them towards empowerment and community.  Tamar’s connects women with resources and services available to help them find a better path.
  • Haircuts from the Heart provides basic hair care for adults and children in need through its mobile sites and voucher program.
  • Tau House offers service experiences for youth and time for reflection in a simple setting.
  • The Community Garden, located on the St. Clare campus, hosts 120 plots of land for local and refugee gardeners.  The Garden provides individuals and families a place to cultivate vegetables and flowers and give back to the community through produce donations.

The Board wishes to expand its membership and expertise, seeking candidates with a strong interest in serving vulnerable people in our community. Also interested in such skill areas as finance/accounting, marketing/PR, social media, and college/young professionals, but all interest is welcome. In 2025, the Board will embark on an exciting strategic planning phase to review the current strategic plan and to set the organization’s future path. Join in setting that direction!

Mission Accomplished class Jan. 2024

The session will be moderated by Jay Shatz, Emmy Award-winning reporter and anchor, whose veteran nonprofit board experience will guide you through the evening's presentation.

The program is made possible by the support of the Community Impact Fund at Horizon Community Funds

OVERVIEW:
Nonprofits are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors responsible for many things including general oversight of the organization and ensuring the nonprofit has ample resources to advance its mission. Included in that structure are often two opportunities for Bearcat students or recent grads: a Young Professionals Group or a Board Committee. Both allow you to start your leadership track with a nonprofit.

OPPORTUNITIES:
A Young Professionals Group is a group of early-career individuals who commit to contributing their time, talent, and/or treasure to a nonprofit organization. The structure often includes meetings built around social and volunteer events encouraging networking.

Board Committees are usually focused on specific categories like public relations, finance, and special events including volunteer recruitment or fundraisers. Serving on a committee is a great way to start your leadership track, especially if you have limited time.

EXPLORATION:
The first and most important step is connecting with a nonprofit you are passionate about. Interested in serving, but don’t have one in mind?

Leadership Council for Nonprofits advocates for more than 200 local organizations making a huge impact of our community. Click here to explore by category and see what could be a good fit for you and your passion. We encourage you to contact them directly and see if there are opportunities for you to get involved.

Another option is our exclusive BOLD listing of current board openings at our Leadership Council member organizations. While these are usually focused on volunteers who have already started their careers, there might be opportunities for you. These listings include direct contact information with the nonprofit. Just like finding the perfect job, make sure the group you join is a good fit for you and you understand how to best help their mission.

Once you join, make it count!

SUPPORT:
Any questions please contact BOLD Program Director Jay Shatz. We’re here to help you Be BOLD Now!

Break the cycle of addiction

You can support Glad House in providing a safe and therapeutic community to empower families to break the cycle of addiction. Committee members are needed now for its Development Committee.

GLAD House, a certified mental health and alcohol and drug prevention agency, works with high-risk youth impacted emotionally and behaviorally by a family member's addiction. These children, often in foster care, are 4x more likely than others to become addicted, and are more likely to have learning disabilities, be truant, repeat more grades, transfer schools, and be expelled. GLAD House provides comprehensive interventions through individual and group treatment. GLAD House seeks subject-matter experts with a passion for service that can help sustain its success.

GLAD House currently seeks Development Committee members

The Development Committee provides oversight for fundraising, development, PR, and marketing. The responsibilities are: coach and support board members and key stakeholders to identify and execute GH development activities; identify giving sources and plan funding relationships; develop and monitor plans for achieving specific goals. Time commitment is 3-4 hours per month, including monthly meetings, networking, and GH community events. If interested, please reach out to GH’s Development Director Cody Moran, 513-641-5530, ext. 105.

Applications Open for All 2025 Cohorts!

Doing good work for our community shouldn’t be this difficult.

But running a nonprofit board has never been tougher.

COVID-19. The economy. Endless distractions. Well-intentioned but disconnected board members focused on their smartphones instead of your mission.

“Mission Accomplished” is a half-day master class exclusively for nonprofit board chairs and vice-chairs. Covering everything from working with the CEO to building an engaged board, the focus is practical solutions to persistent problems facing board leaders.

Thank you to our 2024 BOLD Employer Sponsors:

They are here to help you find your “why” – your greater sense of purpose – by connecting you with opportunities to improve your health, support young people, make new friends, and contribute to a stronger, more cohesive community for all. Every day, the Y builds inclusive and joyful environments where all people can reach goals, make friends, and connect to a cause greater than themselves.  Each year and every day, the Y makes it possible:

Make computers available for everyone

Cincinnati Computer Reuse brings computers back to life! When businesses replace laptops and workstations, Cincinnati Computer Reuse recycles or refurbishes donated computers. Since 2002, their mission has been to provide a safe disposal option for businesses needing to clear out unused computer equipment and to get the best of the equipment to those who need it. To do this, CCR is presently in need of boosting inventory to ensure an adequate supply of good quality (gen 8 and newer) laptops and desktops for refurbishing.

The primary clients of CCR are nonprofits, schools, and low-income families in Greater Cincinnati who need access to affordable technology. CCR has distributed more than 14,000 computers since beginning operations. As a Microsoft Authorized Third-Party Refurbisher, all computers sold have been securely erased and loaded with legal, licensed software. A dedicated volunteer staff and one part-time employee help to make this happen. Of the world’s toxic waste, 70% is e-waste, and one of the easiest ways to overcome this is by recycling and reusing computer equipment. CCR has diverted more than 5 million pounds of e-waste from local landfills. The Board seeks to add new members who can provide and/or build an ongoing pipeline of equipment through access to local businesses. Skills in fundraising, IT, and business development are also desirable.
